The Light Within
2011, larch, metal, and gold leaf, 78" x 96" x 72"
The Light Within imitates the earth's dynamism, including the thrusting of techtonic plates and other geophysical events. Time and weather also create fractured landscapes that have remarkable similarity at different scales. This similarity is echoed in the geography throughout the world. Specific examples have inspired me, including the mountainous landscapes of 17th century Chinese scrolls, the pilgrimage terrain of Mount Kailas in Tibet, and locally, the surrounding valleys in Montana, with their crown of peaks and ranges. The dualities of light/dark, order/chaos, sky/earth harken back to our origins and these dichotomies animate my creative landscape.
